How to Save Money When Buying Gifts for Friends and Family

How to Save Money When Buying Gifts for Friends and Family

How to Save Money When Buying Gifts for Friends and Family

It is always nice to give gifts to your friends and family, especially if it’s a special birthday or wedding anniversary. However, sometimes your best intentions are restricted by the amount of money you have to spend. That doesn’t mean that you can’t still think of things that will be special and be personal to them and you. Here is how you can save money while still buying gifts for your friends and family.

How to Save Money When Buying Gifts for Friends and Family

Bake Something

If you know someone that loves cakes or candy, then this is a great opportunity to give them a special gift while also saving a little money. Cakes and candy are always better made to order than bought from a store, and something that you have made especially for them will be even better. Another reason this can be a good idea is if they have a food allergy or they are not allowed to eat something. It can sometimes be hard to get food, especially nice food in stores, so you can make all their favorites and omit the things they cannot have.

How to Save Money When Buying Gifts for Friends and Family

Give a Gift Card

For those people that are hard to buy for, it can be difficult to find something without having to ask them what they want. That is why giving them a gift card can be a great gift, they can spend it on what they want, and you won’t be buying something that they won’t use. You don’t have to give them a gift card from an expensive store, there are many that are accepted in various stores, so they are the best plan. It will give them the chance to choose where they want to spend it, and you can get a smaller amount. To make it extra special why not design and make the card for the gift card yourself? It will add an additional personal touch.

Get Them Something Personal to Them

Sometimes, you don’t have to spend a lot of money on a gift; you only need to buy them something that matters to them. For example, if they were in the armed forces or worked as a firefighter, then you might want to get them a nice coin that represents what they do such as those you can view here. Whether they are still serving or have retired, they will love to have something from that career they can keep and show to their friends.

How to Save Money When Buying Gifts for Friends and Family

Go to Clearance Sales

If there is a store near you having a clearance sale or a closing sale, then this is the perfect opportunity to go there and get some bargains. Even if there are no events coming up, it will still be great to have things standing by. You can store them in your attic or basement and wait until an event comes up that you think will be suitable. It is best to try and get a variety of things so that you aren’t trying to gift fifteen food mixers to people.

Give an Experience

One thing that can make a nice gift is to give someone an experience of a day at the beach or at the local park for a picnic. You can take control of the day and give them food and drink as well as the nice scenery. Another idea is to give them a surprise party that you can invite all their friends along and have lots of food. Everyone who is attending has to keep it a secret which can be difficult, but with good planning and plenty of time, you can make it a success.

Buy from the Seasonal Sales

After the holidays and other seasonal events have passed, there are always the sales where they try to sell off their old stock ready for the next season. It is a great opportunity to get some bargains that you can save until next year. As well as wrapping paper and cards that are usually heavily discounted, you can also buy little presents that you can keep for a birthday or the same event the next year. It won’t matter that they are a year older, as long as they are still appropriate for the event. Some items such as decorations you might be able to keep using for many years which will save you having to spend more money each year.

How to Save Money When Buying Gifts for Friends and Family

Buy Gifts Online

There are some items that can be bought far cheaper online than they can in stores. In fact, some stores have online versions that offer discounts. It is a good way of finding things you might have seen in a store that was too expansive to buy at the time. There are also many online stores that will resell items such as those on auction sites that are new but pre-owned. These can often have a reduced price and are ideal gifts that you can keep for any occasion.

Make a Family Picture or Movie

For many family members, especially parents and grandparents, there is nothing they like more than to have something from their family. You can start the year before and collect pictures or video clips from important events and put them together for their birthday. It is also something you can do every year, so they can see their children or grandchildren grow up and have a nice record of it. Traditionally, pictures of this type were made by sticking individual pictures into a frame. However, you can now use software to do it for you, or there are companies that will create it for you if you send them the photos electronically.

When you are trying to save money, it can be hard to find the cash to buy gifts for the ones you love. However, there are now many ways that you can use your bargaining tactics to find those sales or end of season reductions to help you. You can also use your own talents of baking or making things to create your own gifts.

Best Ways to Save Money on Food

March 14, 2017

When it comes to budgeting there are areas in your budget with wiggle room and areas where there is no room to save.  A lot of times we don’t want to compromise our quality of living by making some adjustments and cutbacks.  I’ve found that it’s possible to serve my family healthy and nutritious meals and still save money on food.

If your needing budget but don't want to compromise feeding your family healthy meals. These are the Best Ways to Save Money On Food.

Best Ways to Save Money on Food

Food costs are on the rise. So is the general cost of living. This means we’re all looking to save money. Whether you’re feeding a family and just looking to make some cut backs, or saving towards an online BSN degree from Rutgers Online, food is a great place to start. Most of us are spending much more than we need to, and even wasting food unnecessarily. Follow these tips and you’ll soon be saving money and reducing your family’s waste, while still eating a healthy and interesting diet.

If your needing budget but don't want to compromise feeding your family healthy meals. These are the Best Ways to Save Money On Food.

Meal Plan

Going to the store without a plan and putting whatever we fancy into our basket leads to spending too much, wastefulness, and having nights when you just don’t have anything you want to eat. Sit and make a food plan. Write down all the meals you want to eat for the week, and then make a shopping list. Make sure you buy enough of what you need, but nothing more.

If your needing budget but don't want to compromise feeding your family healthy meals. These are the Best Ways to Save Money On Food.

Cook in Bulk

Cooking large portions, and freezing a batch for another day, is much cheaper than cooking two smaller meals. It also means you’ll have a warming meal ready on the days when you don’t have time to cook because you are too busy studying your online BSN program. Buy any ingredients you can freeze, or that have a long shelf life, in larger packets.

If your needing budget but don't want to compromise feeding your family healthy meals. These are the Best Ways to Save Money On Food.

Buy Frozen Fruits, Vegetables and Meat

Frozen fruits, vegetables and meat are often cheaper than the same things fresh. Freezing food doesn’t make it less nutritious, and this is a fantastic way of wasting less, as well as saving money.

If your needing budget but don't want to compromise feeding your family healthy meals. These are the Best Ways to Save Money On Food.

Have Meat Free Days

Meat is one of the most expensive things we buy. Meat free days not only save money, they also help the environment, and help you make sure you get plenty of fruit and veg into your diet. You can easily create vegetarian versions of most of your favorite meals by filling them with vegetables, or adding some halloumi.

If your needing budget but don't want to compromise feeding your family healthy meals. These are the Best Ways to Save Money On Food.

Cook from Scratch

Don’t buy ready-made food. Not even jars of sauce. Cooking everything from scratch means you control your ingredients and quantities. It can be a lot cheaper and healthier.

If your needing budget but don't want to compromise feeding your family healthy meals. These are the Best Ways to Save Money On Food.

Look for Offers

Stores are always full of offers. Look at the reduced sections. Often things are cheaper if they are approaching their used by date. But, they are still ok to freeze same day. On other occasions, things are reduced for reasons such as a rip in the label.

If your needing budget but don't want to compromise feeding your family healthy meals. These are the Best Ways to Save Money On Food.

Try Store’s Own Brand

The general rule should be, try the cheapest version first. Most large stores stock a basic range of groceries, their own brand range, and then branded products. Try the basic version. If you like it, keep buying it, if not, try the store’s own. Only buy brand name if you dislike cheaper alternatives. In many cases, you won’t be able to tell the difference.

Trying these tips could save you a lot of money. It will also help you discover new meals, ingredients and cooking techniques. Saving money on food doesn’t mean you must have a boring diet. You might just need to be a little more creative.

What are the best ways you’ve found to save money on food? What areas do you find are the easiest for budgeting?

Frugal Gifting When Shopping for Gifts Everyone Will Love

November 14, 2016

We all love to give wonderful presents to those we love and care about. It’s vital that when we give we remember our budget when shopping for gifts everyone will love.

Frugal Gifting When Shopping for Gifts Everyone Will Love

Frugal Gifting When Shopping for Gifts Everyone Will Love

There’s nothing quite like the gift of giving but with increasing amounts of pressure put on us to spend more and more each year, it can be difficult to know where to stop. From buying presents for Christmas to shopping for the ultimate engagement gift, you might be looking for ways you can start saving when giving gifts.

You could opt for traditional ways, including sales, Black Friday and other seasonal promotions but even these can draw you in and have you spending more money than you intended to. So, to help your present buying budget go further, why not try a few of these simple tricks?

Frugal Gifting When Shopping for Gifts Everyone Will Love

Adhere to the Four-Gift Rule

The four-gift rule is something that’s arisen in the more recent years and involves buying four gifts for your recipient. These are something that they need, something that they want, something that they can wear and something that they can read. The idea is that when you stick to buying four of these presents, things that they’ll actually get use out of, you won’t get carried away buying other stocking fillers on impulse.

However, this methodology might not work when it comes to family members or friends, as it is primarily focused on children. But if you are buying for the kids, try this rule to see if it helps you to cut down on your spending this year.

Frugal Gifting When Shopping for Gifts Everyone Will Love

Use Unwanted Gift Cards

In 2014, there was $750 million worth of gift cards that weren’t used, according to MarketWatch. So if you’ve got some of these unwanted gift cards lying around, why don’t you use them to buy someone else’s gift? OK, so it might feel like you’re cheating by not spending any of your own money on the recipient but it makes sure these cards aren’t going to waste and saves you money in the process.

And because there are so many of these cards going to waste each year, there are a number of companies who have started selling discounted cards. People wanting to get rid of their unwanted cards sell them to these organizations who then sell them to you at a discounted price. This is particularly useful if you know someone who will appreciate a gift card for a particular store.

Frugal Gifting When Shopping for Gifts Everyone Will Love

Break Up the Spending

One of the worst things about buying gifts, especially over the holiday season, is that you have to spend a lot of money at once. That’s why it’s worth shopping throughout the year, especially in sales, so you can accumulate your gifts over time. This removes the added stress as Christmas approaches and your bank balance starts to dwindle, while also giving you a bit more time to prepare and think of gift ideas.

Another fantastic way to break up your spending is to buy items in bulk because you’ll often get these at a discounted price. Look for 3-for-2 offers or promotions on bulk items as these can be great for using as stocking fillers or for giving to friends and family throughout the year for their birthdays.

And don’t forget to look at what rewards credit card providers such as Chase offer you because these can help you to earn points as you’re spending and could even help to contribute towards a gift or even a holiday in the future.

Frugal Gifting When Shopping for Gifts Everyone Will Love

Use Apps When You’re Shopping

Another great way to save money when you’re shopping is to use apps that are geared towards finding you the best price. Amazon allows you to see prices as and when they’re updated, which can help you to save money as you’re shopping around. But there are also apps that combine all of the shopping ads and promotions in your local area so you can flick through them easily to find the right deal for you. Some of them will also show you what coupons are available so you know where you can get the best discounts and deals.

Frugal Gifting When Shopping for Gifts Everyone Will Love

Slice is one of these apps and this one will even monitor what you’ve bought. This means that if the store you bought a product from reduces their pricing you can get a refund for the difference (in participating stores only).

When it comes to shopping for gifts, it’s easy to get carried away, especially during the holiday season when there are so many wonderful things on offer. But with a little bit of creativity and planning, you can be much more frugal with your gift buying without your recipient knowing.

Going into debt is not what you want, but if you make frugal gifting a priority you can get everyone what they love and stay in your budget.  What are ways you stay on a budget when shopping for gifts everyone will love?

Saving Big Made Easy with Groupon Coupons

April 5, 2016

There is nothing better than saving your family some money.  With my busy schedule and the chaos that comes with raising 7 kiddos I have trouble sitting down and clipping coupons or being able to drive around to find the best deals.  The reality of being a large family means we can’t afford not to find deals.

This is a sponsored post, Heartbeats~ Soul Stains only shares things I do use, would use or know my readers can benefit from.  You can find my disclosure policy here.groupon coupon

In comes Groupon Coupons…. I can’t begin to tell you the variety of amazing savings I’ve found with Groupon Coupons.

I first found out about these incredible savings when I was getting a massage.  While I was about ready to walk out the door a couple came in with their Groupon Coupon.  I was over listening (sounds better than eavesdropping right?) and was a bit shocked when they were paying for their 2 massages.  They were paying less for 2 massages than I had just paid for 1… Say what!!!!  I knew I had to get the scoop on this… and that’s when my Groupon Coupon wonderment began.  I haven’t looked back since 🙂Saving Big Made Easy with Groupon Coupon

There is an amazing assortment of different deals and savings you can get with Groupon Coupons.  The bargains are absolutely endless; travel, dining (my fave), shopping, events, services and on and on!  When I’m looking for something in particular I will go on to Groupon’s website and search for a coupon for whatever it is I’m wanting to do or need.  I also utilize their awesome Groupon App, bargains literally at my fingertips.  I’m also signed up for Groupon’s daily emails so I’ll get instant notification of things in my area or items I’ve searched for before that are having a good buy type of thing going on.  Everyday I see something new Groupon Coupons has to offer, savings are not small they are HUGE!

Our family is enthralled with the savings we’ve discovered since signing up for Groupon Coupons.  They are linked with top brands and stores, I’ve even found coupons for little mom and pop stores and restaurants.  There’s just a little something for everyone.

Here’s some stores I’ve recently found some terrific Coupons for:

  • Nordstrom
  • Macys
  • Kohls
  • Plus tons of places right in my home town

My favorite thing to do with Groupon Coupons is their category shopping.  I like that I’m able to go to a certain category and browse for what I need from the comfort of my home.  This is a great way to find new places we may not have heard of or may have thought were too pricey for us.  Now we’re able to shop for things we need and things we want while staying in our budget.

Have you tried Groupon Coupons?  What kind of things would you love to find some big time savings?

A Moment of Trouble~ Mommy Reality Challenge

June 7, 2014

I’m participating in a fun and creative way we can show the reality of being a mom.  If you’d like to read more about the challenge you can check it out here.

This weeks challenge is to share how our kids, our pets, our significant others or even ourselves cause trouble in our lives.  To be honest, if I were to share the predicaments I get my own self into that would be a crazy long post 😉  We’ll save that for when I have oodles of time!!!!

 A Moment of Trouble

No matter how many kids I’ve had (7) there are still times where I have encountered some challenging shopping outings with a 2-year-old.  There is always some sort of adventure, craziness or the ever headache causing defiance.  You know that defiance where they aren’t going to do anything they don’t want to do.  In fact, they will just sit there and not budge.  If you attempt to move them the screams can be heard throughout the store.  What really annoys me is the onlookers giving me those stares and smirks of; “Oh, my kids would NEVER act this way” or how about the “If that was my daughter” I would do this or that.

Moment-of-trouble

That’s right I’ll just hide in the clothes…. No one will ever find me here!

A recent moment of trouble was while I was checking out at the store, my daughter decided to plop down with her little carrying case and just sit there.  She didn’t want to move and I was in a big hurry.  I decided to have my older daughter stand next to her while I paid for my items so we could just leave.  A man came up to me and said: “you know, your daughter is sitting on the ground and I’m sure there are lots of germs there”.  I turned to him with a smile and as pleasant as can be stated, “Well, she is my 7th child and the rest have survived sitting on the ground.  I think I got this.  Thank you for your concern.”moment-of-trouble

With kids and in life it’s all about picking your battles.  At the moment of trouble, what is the best course of action for your intended results?  There are times where we have to just deal with the circumstances at hand and other times where we are able to turn a situation into a learning experience.  Setting the shopping journeys up for success ahead of time is always best.  You can read about some of my ideas for challenging times with our kids here.

When kids are acting up in stores anything can happen, wich all the chaos you need to know what to do if you slip and fall in a store as well.

moment-of-trouble

Here’s my daughter dramatically holding on to Minnie Mouse and telling her “Bye, Minnie” with her weeping little voice since she wasn’t allowed to bring her home with us.

Our moment of Trouble this week has definitely been the shopping trips that at times felt like events!  With this being the first week of everyone being home from school, there were some major adjustments to be made.  Raising toddlers to teenagers sure does keep me on my toes, I’m not even sure I know of a quiet moment anymore.  At the end of the day when I think I’ve had the toughest day ever; I sit back and smile and feel blessed and know I wouldn’t want it any other way.

Last week I shared my Mommy Reality by sharing a Mommy Meals disaster, come check it out.
